3 Sounds that Shouldn’t Come from Your Air Conditioner

June 30, 2020

During the warm, humid summers in Williamsport, MD, you’ll hear your air conditioning system turn on and blow cool air into your home many times each day. A properly functioning air conditioning system operates quietly, with just a click on, low humming or whooshing sound from the air and a click off. Unusual sounds are a sign of a problem with your air conditioner. If you hear any of these sounds, you’ll soon need an air conditioning repair.

Hissing or Whistling

A hissing or whistling sound coming from your air conditioning system often means there’s an active refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks require a repair from an experienced air conditioning company as soon as possible. Exposure to the refrigerant could be harmful to your health and the health of your other household members, including pets. Only certified technicians should handle this type of repair, explains the Department of Energy.

Rattling or Clicking

Your air conditioning system should only click two times during each cooling cycle. If it constantly clicks, there could be an issue with the capacitor or another part. If the system is constantly clicking and won’t turn all the way on, you’ll need an air conditioning company to inspect the system right away. Rattling often means something is loose. A prompt inspection identifies the problem and prevents additional damage to your air conditioning system.

Squealing or Screeching

Loud squealing or screeching sounds aren’t a good sign. If you hear them, you’ll need an air conditioning repair as soon as possible. Squealing sounds are often caused by a problem with the condenser’s fan. Screeching noises could be caused by an off-balance motor, loose screw or belt, debris in the unit or a damaged fan blade. We recommend turning your air conditioner off if you hear these sounds.
